“Darshan?” I whispered. “He’s here?”

“Yes.” Tully nodded.

I stumbled back, feeling like I’d been shoved and Misha had to grab my elbow to keep me from tripping over one of the ropes holding up the bouncy castle. His name alone brought a crashing wave of emotions with it. I’d managed to convince myself in the months I’d been at the compound that I’d never see him again. Hell, I’d developed whole new feelings for someone else and yet, to know he was that close by— I didn’t even know what to do with that.

Misha’s eyes met mine and a muscle in his jaw ticked. It was like he could read every confused thought I was having.

Wait? Could he?

I checked my shields. No, they were still up. But it didn’t seem to matter because whatever Misha saw in my face made him flinch.

“Why would Darshan be tailing you?” Misha asked Tully, his eyes still glued to mine. I chewed my lip, dropping my gaze to the ground and Misha’s hand on my elbow tightened. “What else haven’t you told us?”

Tully shrugged. “I don’t know the ins and outs of all that Wesley’s been up to. I do know he’s assigned Darshan to track you and Wren down and bring the two of you in.”

“What?” I gaped at her. “Why would he make Darshan do that?”

Tully sighed. “I think it’s some kind of test. I’m not fully sure why, but you can be sure that Wesley has his reasons.”

Of course he did. Wesley had reasons for everything he did. Just thinking about Wesley made my skin crawl.

“We need to go.” Misha tugged on my arm. “Now.”

Tully nodded. “Yes, you two need to get out of—”

“No,” Misha growled, “You’re coming with us.”

“I can’t,” Tully said, smoothing her hands along her apron. “You know I can’t leave them.”

“Tully—”

“Don’t try to change my mind!” She gripped Misha’s shirt. “I won’t leave those kids, end of discussion.” She lifted herself up on her tiptoes and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “I love you, sweet one.” Her voice softened. “Now take Wren and go.”

Misha’s jaw ticked and he looked like he wanted to argue, but instead he slid his fingers into my hand. “Let’s go.” His grip was tight as he pulled me away from the bouncy castle.

I looked behind us, managing a small wave in Tully’s direction before I was yanked around the corner. I stumbled, but Misha didn’t slow his pace. He was nearly running, shoving a path through the crowd and ignoring the glares and shouts of complaint that followed us.

“Misha, slow down,” I gasped as we neared the parking lot.

I can’t. We need to get to the truck before he finds us. Misha spoke into my mind as he yanked the keys from his pocket. You don’t understand what could happen if— Misha drew up short, his eyes fixed ahead of us.

“What?” I followed his gaze.

Darshan leaned against an SUV parked across from our truck. His posture was casual and he looked almost carefree as a slow grin spread across his face.
